EXCLUSIVE: As far as Hollywood legends go, Luke Wilson admitted there was one star he certainly looked up to – Academy Award winning actor Kevin Costner.
Little did Wilson know, many years later, he was about to be offered a lead role in one of Costner’s most ambitious films to date: Horizon: An American Saga.
Horizon: An American Saga is now streaming, only on Stan.
The star-studded Western saga was a deeply personal project for Costner, marking his directorial return for the first time since 2003.

“I was working on another movie at the time and Kevin was out scouting locations in Utah,” Wilson told 9Entertainment.
“He and I had a Zoom call, I thought it was a job interview… he hired me during the Zoom and then I didn’t know what to say!”
Wilson plays Matthew Van Weyden in the film, the captain of a wagon train in Chapter 1 and soon-to-be Chapter 2 of the epic franchise.
But when the star finally had the chance to work with the Oscar-winning actor and director, Wilson admitted Costner was like everything he expected and more.
“I’m 52, so right when I was starting to go to movies in the early to mid ’80s with my brothers and friends, Kevin, he was the star back then,” Wilson began.

“He would have kind of taken the mantle from Jack Nicholson, Gene Hackman and Robert De Niro then Al Pacino – he was our star.
“I saw everything that he was in, even his more off-beat movies like Fandango which I love… so I felt, the way you can feel a connection to a band you love, that’s how I felt towards Kevin.
“It’s not a cliché when I say it was a dream come true to get the chance to work with him.”
Like many Hollywood greats, Wilson revealed Costner was a lot like the characters he played on screen, in the sense that he was a “decent, hardworking” man.
“You think you know somebody – and Kevin’s a cool guy, we know that from watching his movies – but it wasn’t until I worked with him and was directed by him you get a sense of what a sensitive person he is.”

Not only “thoughtful” in his direction, Wilson said it was interesting to follow how Costner “handled the pressure” of the four-part film franchise.
Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won – and lost –through the blood, sweat and tears of many.
Starring alongside Costner and Wilson is an impressive A-list cast including Sienna Miller (Alfie), Giovanni Ribisi (Saving Private Ryan) and Will Patton (Stan Exclusive Series Yellowstone).
Plus Jena Malone (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) and Australia’s own Sam Worthington (Stan Original Film Transfusion).
“We were in the middle of nowhere in Utah and [Kevin] really kept it all moving forward,” Wilson admired.
